Is the reverse of a 5 speed manual fixable

You will need a complete transmission overhaul. Fixing just the reverse gear will take as much tearing apart as redoing the entire trans.

I couldn't get into reverse and my mechanic said it was a simple plastic piece that he replaced. It's been about 2 years since it was replace and I'm noticing trouble again ... plastic is good for somethings but not so great for this. Not sure if that's your problem but it was a cheap/easy fix for me last time.
