Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I actually have 2 questions. I just got a Mercedes 2004 CLK500. question 1.At what
temperature should the car be running normally?question 2. When I am going over 50mph
for more then about 5 minutes. I get this warning "Reduce Oil Level". Running around
town I never got the message, just on the freeway. and in the morning when I do the OIL
check on the message board, it comes back as OK. Any ideas? Thanks.

If the oil level is good, I would check the oil pressure sending unit, it could be faulty sending a wrong single. From what I'm reading 180 to 200 degrees in the range, of course that will change depending the driving conditions (ie, Highway or City Driving) http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-general-discussion/28337-engine-temp-2.html
Thanks for the answers. Very helpful. I did check the oil with the dipstick, and it's in the normal range, so I will have my mechanic take a look at the sensor. And thanks for the link to the discussion on temperature, Mine is running between 80 and 100. It never goes over 100, regardless how hot it's outside. I was driving through the central valley where it was 105 outside and it always stayed between 80 and 100. I guess I was trying to compare to my E320 that the temperature never goes over 80. Thanks again.
Fahrenheit or Celsius on the readings? Celsius to Fahrenheit is easy. C X 1.8 = F So your reading between 168 to 180 which is normal. I'd recheck the oil level setting on a level ground after the car has not been running for five (5) minutes to allow the oil to settle back down in the oil pan. Make sure the dip stick is all the way down on the stick guide. Pull it out, wipe it off and re-stick and read it again. If it is still normal, then have the sensor looked at.
