I was used 10W-40 for modest klima in Europe. Any standard modern engine oil can is suitable for this engine.

I'm a Benz tech at a Benz Dealer. We use Mobil 1 15W-50 for these vehicles. All Mercedes Benz Vehicles require Fully Synthetic motor oil, and Mobil 1 is factory fill, and the recommended oil. Cheers

If you are in Europe or somewhere where the temp can reach 0 celcius at some point ( Winter) . You should use 0-40 W sports oil from Castrol =) Not only dosent it work good as H*** , but it will make you'r engine respond faster and better ;)

Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard, Clearly you know nothing about sub- zero temps , 0-40W is the only thing we can use if the temp goes under -10 Cel. If have tuned so many M.B , and not to mansion had to change oil , cause the standard oil deliverd from the factory, started to the thick floating! .

hi, i'm guessing from the -50 and 40's that this engine is a diesel or has something in it that requires it. but i would recomend (because it's OHC or DOHC) a 15w-50 mineral oil for summer, and 10w-40 mineral oil for winter and then add in a bottle of ZDP additives because the API is limiting the concentrations of certain lubricating minerals such as ZDP. it's what's in comercial diesel oils cuz synthetic would be too expensive in order to make it last as well. good luck

Hi, if you love your 97 benz go with ( 5 w 40 ) PENTOZIN or ( 5 w 40 ) MOBIL 1 or ( 5 w 40 ) ROYAL PURPLE all of this oils and thickness EUROPEAN FORMULA if you put something different your engine will knock every time on the morning for 10 seconds or more. and if you live in very cold area change it to ( 0 W 40 ) weight stay with full synthetic; remember your driving a BENZ, check owners manual you'll see. good luck!!!

Wow! What a lot people really don’t understand much about engine oils. Even the MB mechanics don’t seem to know what’s right oil to use? I have a 1996 C280 and 2006 E500. I live in an area that can get to -10 degrees to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Mercedes specifics oils that meet Mercedes oil specification 229.5. This usually shows Mobil 1 5w40 or similar oil that meets their 229.5 requirement. With that said, 5w40 full synthetic Mobil 1 is good for just about any Mercedes Benz gasoline engine. BUT, since I’m an engineer, and my best friend is a jet engine engineer who rebuilds Porsche racing engines, with both agree that MB is basically in bed with the Mobil oil company and their specifications are a crock of shit. First of all, most synthetic oils ARE NOT full synthetics. They are a mix which WILL start to break down under load and heat. Another problem is lack of proper amounts of zinc or ZDDP in most popular oil brands. If you want the good stuff, your going to need to buy something like Royal Purple, Valvoline full synthetic racing oil or Amsoil and stick with something like 10w40 or even 20w50. 5w40 is just too thin to cushion bearing and tappits.
