Location of battery in 1997 Mercedes Sl500

Asked by yannoj2 Jan 03, 2015 at 05:57 PM about the 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So the battery died and I got a friend to help me recharge it.  We couldn't find the battery though, so we googled its location.  It appears to be on the top left side, under the hood, but it looks like it has a cover which needs to be unscrewed.  However due to heavy snowfall and severe cold we gave up for the night.  Is the location of the battery accurate?  And if so, is there anything else needed to be done after we unscrew the cover?  Thanks

Don't forget to check the trunk also (usually right side). Not sure about 1997. But later SL's have the starting battery in front and accessory battery in trunk.

No pun intended - but not being able to service your car seems like a good enough excuse to me to move where it doesn't snow. lol

SL's from the late 70's on have the battery in the trunk on the right side when facing the car from the rear. It is under a cover which pivots to the left.

I also have a 1999 SL500...the battery is located in the trunk on the right side(I use a Battery Mindr(maintainer) when not in use. I love my car!!
