when does the engine check light go own?

when does the engine check light go own? I cant see the engine check light among the dashboard lights. My 1995 Mercedes c class is not starting and somebody suspects its because the engine check light is not showing among the other dashboard lights when the key is on before starting.

A light will not keep your car from starting- go through the usual routine- check for battery, gas, spark-
