ML350 ha the engine light on taken to a mechanic first was that the catalitic converter was blocked then now it needs to have the cam belt replaced does this make sense on a vehicle that has 50,000 miles and was purchased brand new?

Do you know what the code came up on the car???? sounds strange to me as well...

No I do not in fact I had a major service done and subsequently the light came on . The first time I went back they said that the fuel mixture was too rich and then the second time that air filter needed tightening and then the 3 rd time it needed a new cam belt which costs about USD 5,0k
seems like a lot of work for a car that only has 50k on it, I would ask what code came up and you can look it up to see what it is...
Apologies just before the cam belt need replacement they told me that the catalytic converter was blocked
I'm not sure but I think there is a separate warranty for emission related items ~~~ so don't assume because your car is 8 years old that's not covered. Geez, what happened to Mercedes-Benz mechanics? If it were my car ... I would contact a regional office and tell them I intend to put what happened to me on every free web site ,, from Craigslist to the free Ebay classified .~ Mercedes-Benz lifeblood is in their quality and a car needing those repairs with only 50k is a disgrace. I suspect your mechanic was either a trainee or incompetent. ~ Good Luck
I did go to an agent in fact I reside in South Africa so I am not sure whether I am being fleeced so I will take this to another Mercedes agency for a second opinion. Many thanks
