Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turned the key and my 89 dodge ram 50 started to crank and then everything
shut off. Now there is no power or engine crank and a little bit of white smoke
came from under the hood. I couldn't get the hood up in time to see where
smoke came from, but somewhere near the ignition coil that is mounted
between the battery and the windshield Thoughts?

It was very fast. I don't think I hear a poof, but it was instantaneous like that---both power and engine.

Then I'd start looking at wiring from battery to ignition and also to the block on the fender by battery (I forget the name of the part)....see picture for visual explanation

If the wires got hot enough they could have melted the insulation and shorted out on each other. When that happens it can appear instantaneous
