I have a 20ft.travel trailer(1000lbs.)with electric brakes.Can my 1986 jeep cherokee laredo with a 2.8liter engine 5spd manual command-trac 4wd?

You should be able to handle this trailer with the Jeep with no problem, provided you have a properly installed hitch. It will be a greater strain on the 2.8L engine than it would be on the 4.0L 6-cylinder, but nonetheless it should be doable.

Would that make it okay for hauling a 400 dirtbike using a trailerhitch mounted carrier?

Just a funny note about this: About 30 years ago I was tasked with towing a 1979 Ford van 30 miles with......a 1986 Cherokee Chief. Yea. The Cherokee is 2900 lbs. The van is 4700 lbs. While I was able to (barely) tow the van, the cherokee was pulled all over the road by the van. It was raining as well and went I went around any turn, the van would pull the cherokee sideways through the turn. Great fun. So I'm going to say that the tow capacity is less than 4700 lbs!! :) wayyyy less ;)
