If its a used motor that you installed I would check compression on all cyl to insure no problems there. How old is the gas that was in the tank? Have you tried to shoot ether in the intake?

I had that happen once to my 1993 Wrangler. I held the throttle open while cranking the engine.

Does this have an automatic trans or stick? From what year did you get newer engine.. If automatic, and the year of engine is newer, You must use the older engines flywheel with the starter gear... It has the correct holes for the crank position sensor to pickup the correct sequence... The newer engine had the newer computer and a different fltwheel...... That is what happened when I swapped out my 88 Cherokees engine to a 97 Cherokee engine...
