I have a 88 xj. I've been wanting to put a 4" lift on but im having doubts about it being powerful enough to climb some hills in it,so i really don't want to put in money into it until some body gives me some advise on this topic! I dont want to get rid of it to buy another one because my dad gave it to me.I know that the suzuki samurai has a 4cil motor too and are real good fourwheelers. please help me out with this, Thank you.

Yes, they are, but if you swap a 4.0 into it, it will be better. This is a cheap and easy swap.
yes they are powerful enough a 6cyl would be better as is it worth it goes i personaly would maybe find another xj a bit newer with a six cyl. in it and lift that. For the price that they go for now you can usualy pick one up for a grand or less.
No, the 2.5 is a terrible motor. Not worth owning. Some will suggest you do an engine swap.. that will only work if you have a COMPLETE donor car. You'll have to replace the computer, all the electrics, all the sensors including the fuel sensor in the tank, ... totally not worth it. XJs are cheap. Unless you've got money and time to burn, sell the 2.5, and buy a 90-94 4.0HO, bullet proof motors. Awsome np241 trans cases, solid front axle w/o a vacuum disconnect. Great years for XJs. Don't compare with the Sami... the Sami weights 1000lb less, has about 3/4 the wheelbase.
i have an 87 2.5 l. it 4x4's great, even with 420000 km on it
