Skidding and sliding??

Asked by pittens Mar 14, 2008 at 09:16 PM about the 1987 Jeep Wagoneer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I gently apply brakes, it doesn't seem to want to slow down and when I apply more my Wagoneer slides and I lose control since it's all over the road! It's in 4WD, because the roads are snowy.  Also, when backing out of driveway onto a downhill slope it skids downhill, no snow there!  Are the brakes locking? What is the problem?

Sounds to me that you have a leak in your braking system and brakes are not working effectively. Could be anything from a leaking wheel cylinder to a bad master cylinder or leaky brake line. Have this checked out.
