Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is there a resource I could use to make a checklist of what I should  have done
in the spring to prevent trouble during the driving season and a list of those
things that can  cause the car not to start which I could address with the know
how and tools and avoid a tow.  Thanks all who are being so helpful.

Experience is a good source . You own a classic car , Tear through it or Go on U-TOOB or find on line forums for bug owners . Flush the coolant system - , - Nah Just Kiddin'

Check the basics. Tune up every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first if you're using the original points/condenser ignition system. Inspect your belts and tires periodically. Check and top off brake fluid as well as any other fluids you have twice a year. If you start seeing more frequent top offs being needed a further inspection is needed. In your trunk carry a spare belt, spare fluids, a can of Fix A Flat, a couple rags, a basic tool kit, a book of matches, and an extra set of points and condenser. You can use the match book cover to set your points close enough to get you running in a pinch. Having these will enable you to make a simple repair on the fly to get you home or to the nearest repair shop. Hope that helps! Jim
