Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 72 beetle starts right up and idles fine but is now bogging when starting off in 1st and when shifting to 2nd,3rd and 4th.Once cruising in any gear it runs great.I replaced rubber fuel line to fuel pump and to carb, new fuel filter[correct flow],cleaned fuel pump screen and new gasket, sprayed carb cleaner in carb, added fuel conditioner to tank and loosened fuel cap.I've been told I need a new carb since it's cheaper than a rebuilt one.Anyone have an idea?

I would take the carb apart, clean and blow out the jets. Try the simple things first. You may want to check your timing and your spark plugs too.

Thanks for the reply. Think you helped with other issues I had and you were right on the money.Went to garage that fixed other problems and they found bad compression in one cylinder.
