1972 VW Beetle bogs when press on gas too quick

Asked by bocho72 Apr 30, 2011 at 02:12 AM about the 1972 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently rebuild carb, 34/pict3, fresh oil, new timing belt, and valve cover gaskets.

Now, before all of the above it was still doing the same thing. When pressing on the gas too quickly and even moderately slowly the car bogs/chokes and sometimes it dies. I have to start off slow to even get it to move in first, wont accelerate past second. What could be causing this? Any ideas very helpful! thanks.

First things, what distributor, and what is the timimg set at? The 34 pict carb works well with a vaccum advance distributor but not so well with the mechanical only distributors. also since tje carb was just rebuilt (did u rebuild it?) What jets are in the carb? The most likely problems are timimg set wrong (mechanical dist is set different than vaccum one's), firing order wrong (wires not hooked up in correct sequence), or vaccum leaks. The 34 pict carb is well known for throttle shaft bushing leaks.

Hello, 1972 VW don't use timing belt or chain; it's gear driven. I would check the ignition timing first, then the carb needles.

sounds like carb adjustment don't confuse air mixture with bypass screw.....bypass screw used for idle adj only.. just a guess...jzbug
