Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I plan to buy SK (made in USA) sockets and end wrenches for the normal maintenance on our '72 VW Beetle.  I never expect to pull the engine, or take the steering apart. I know a 10mm is a common size. What other sizes will I likely regularly use?

I would get the basic socket set. I don't have a '72 VW but on other cars, usual sizes are 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14mm. On my '02 GM most used are 10 & 14mm. Combination wrenches in those sizes are handy. You can get complete inexpensive sets at Harbor Freight and upgrade the ones you use the most with the better tools. After you start wrenching, you'll learn which sizes are used the most. A ratcheting boxed end wrench or two can be added later.

No radiator so maybe no tranny cooling lines? Does VW use an external tranny oil cooler? 13mm/1/2 inch was a common size on my '71 Opel Manta. Another heavy hitter on that car was the 19mm.

don't remember the "stick0matic" having a cooler now that you mention it...oh well 1/2 flare is a useful one to have in your arsenal at any rate-
