I just purchased a 1973 VW Beetle, long story shot, won't start with new battery. Any ideas?

Question type: General

I know the car runs because previous owner started it with a battery of his own.  I know its getting power because
the engine light come on when the key is turned to the starting position.

If the only thing that changed was the battery I would look at battery posts and cable ends for corrosion. Also check that cable ends are still intact with wire. You could also have a starter that is hanging up. Might be able to tap the starter and get it to run, if this is the case. Good luck those are fun little cars.
