Condenser is new with the points? sounds like you need to go see the vw guys who can refresh everything after a long standstill. the dry seals or things that needed lube and to be turned or rolled over once every few months and the neglected stuff that was before. Or you can get the compleat manual for it.

A complete tune would include base engine tests, maybe carb refresh, or they may do valve seals and adjust, as well as your ignition parts filters and adjustments. A reasonable diagnosis should rise to the surface during those procedures and a time saver plan like that should get you some piece of mind so you would not be afraid to drive it and have it towed home several times.
