I have a 1979 volkswagen beetle and everytime I drive it I smell gas - what could be the problem?.

My mechanic has checked all the gas lines and the tank for leaks and there are none. I also replaced the gas cap. I was told this was a common problem with the bugs - any suggestions on how to eliminate the gas fume problem?

Had the same problem on my '70 and discovered that the excelerator pump was leaking--right on to the exhaust! Crank it up and watch behind the carb for fuel when you goose it (if the carbs are similar which I don't know). A carb rebuild is probably in order--not an expensive fix. Mike in Richmond

I have a 69 that had the same problem. Turned out to be from original hose bits between the filler and the tank.
