Beetle Wiring Problems

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When i tryed this i didn't have the battery hooked up, i was just jumping it (also
was hot wiring it). The car would turn over, however when I stopped hot wiring
it, the car still tryed to turn over and wouldn't stop until i disconected the
jumper cables (i was hot wiring it because i didn't have the key). My cousin
suggested that all that should be done is replaces the ignition column. Can
anyone confirm is this suggestion is good enough to fix the problem?
One more thing, whoever the guy was that owned it first buggered up something
because there are wires for speakers and other things all over the place in the
car but don't connect to anything.
Please help because I want to get the car running by the spring and the wiring is
all thats stopping me.

I sugest replacing the ignition switch first and charging the battery to a full capacity, then try starting it, if you still have the starter engaged disconnect the battery and ck your starter or replace it. that should solve your problem. good luck. Leo.

what year is the car? what exactly do you mean "hot wire" the car? where were you hooking up power to hot wire it? the car will not start unless you have 12 volts to the coil. depending on what year the car is, is where the 12 volts comes from.

It's a 74 standard beetle. By hot wire i mean i had part of the ignition shit exposed and put a wire in 2 of the spots and it started to turn over. I probly didn't have the full voltage at all given i was jumping it directly from another car and the beetle had no battery in at the time.

yes you will have to replace the keyswitch,is a PITA,get your local locksmith he may be able to make you a key, will be a lot cheaper.

O no, i found the key eventually, but i havent tried making it start since as i've been working on another beetle with my brother.

I have a 1974 super beetle V W convertible, I started it, started fine , stopped, went dead again then would not start. I tried jumping it off, still would not start. I had the battery checked and it is good, what do you suggest?
