my 1974 automatic beetle stalls sporadically, why does it do this?

Asked by pete_the_chef_1 Dec 10, 2007 at 10:10 AM about the 1974 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the carb is set up correctly and only 2 years old, sometimes it runs fine from the start of a journey and sometimes not, its performance is not weather related, the only constant is when i have to stop at the bottom of a hill on my way down it always stalls, any ideas???
i had to adjust the idle to stop it stalling all the time but this is problematic as it being an automatic it jerks to a start which is dodgy?? can anyone help me please???

Sounds to me like perhaps a torque convertor in the transmission. I'd have this checked out as it could get worse as time goes on.

cheers for that, is it worth while changing the fuel filter and having the tank washed out? there is no sign of muck in the carb but if the filter is doing it's job is it possibly muck in the tank??
