tire size on a 1975 vw beetle

Asked by djottero Feb 20, 2012 at 05:26 PM about the 1975 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: General

The tires on my 1975 Bug are 165 r15. I have been told that a 165/80 r15 is comparable. Is that accurate?

4,445

Hi you are correct in your assumption, as near as makes no difference the 165/80 r15 is within a few millimetres of the original 165 r15. The measurements are as follows : 165 = tyre width in mm , 80 = sidewall height in mm & r15 = diametre of the centre of the tyre in Inches . The old tyre numbering system assumed a standard tyre profile (sidewall height) and therefore did not need to show it.
