I have a 87 VW cabriolet and it really struggles to get up hills, virtually stops when in 2nd gear and has a lot of white smelly smoke coming from the engine... What could be the cause of this?!

Other than going up hills seems to
drive fine... Any thoughts??

The white smoke is oil- your engine is worn out, has lost compression, and is burning oil- time for a rebuild if you think it's worth it-
