what does it mean when the voltage meter stay on 0 or a little highter. the car starts right up. would it be the alternator or just that the battery needs to be charged?

Post a picture of the meter, please. Also, check the batter voltage while the car is idling....post that, too...then we'll talk

I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but if you are showing zero volts, it's time for a new alternator.
