My wrench light has been coming on with no warning and am going in limp mode.

Asked by jtanberg Jan 14, 2014 at 01:53 PM about the 2007 Ford Edge

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

For the last month, my wrench light has come on about a dozen times and the car goes in limp mode.  I am able to pull the car over, turn it off and take they key out of the ignition.  Then the light is off when I restart the car.  It seems as if it comes on more frequently the colder it is.  The vehicle seems to have lost its "get up and go" and sometimes stays in low gear longer that it had in the past.  My tranny fluid is fine...It almost feels like I'm towing a trailer!  The RPMs seem to rev and dip as well with no rhyme or reason.  It has never stalled out completely, but I would like to fix it before it does.  Any thoughts?

I went to a dealership and they put in all new spark plugs. The gap on the spark plugs are suppose to be about .0055 and they one's on my Edge were at .0085. Ive read all the issue to and I went to a non Dealership and they first checked the plugs and they were bad. It cost about $250.00

Same issue here. June 21/ 2018, then again 8/29 and 8/30/ 2018 at 5:30pm in rush hour traffic. No codes stored. Dealership can't find a code, can't find the problem. I told them to replace the fkg Electronic Throttle Body - a known suspected problem by Ford. I hope this fixes it.

Do this before you wreck your Transaxle transmission. It is two sensors in the Transaxle transmission, called a TSS and OSS about $80.00 to $100.00 for both Rock Auto . It's a common lemon in 2007, 2008, and some 2009s. If your a little mechanicaly inclined it takes about 4 hours at slow pace to change. Also you need to drain and refill transmission with ATV 4 or mercon 5 it's in your book. Then drive and repeat about 3 times before you change sensors. Drain 4th time then change sensors then refill and your Good to go another 200,000 km. You also need to change your ptu oil about 12 Oz by sucking it out of fill plug, also your rear diff.

Go online to the Office of Defects Investigations. If we all band together, hopefully Ford will issue a recall and we can get it fixed. Here is my experience (and the complaint I filed): Vehicle in motion on city road when vehicle all of a sudden makes loud/hard clank noise and immediately loses power - almost like it started towing a trailer! Loss of power, wrench light, TPS light, airbag light all come on, speedometer stops working. Pulled over, loud/hard clank sound with every gear change P-2. Vehicle had displayed no issues prior to this. Dropped vehicle off at mechanic, when he looked at it next morning, vehicle is running perfect. Today is a Friday, I was supposed to go out of town (via I75) but I am going to stay local as it does not feel safe to drive on the highway. I am greatly concerned about what appears to be a HUGE safety issue with this car. There are multiple complaints about the same issue to be found all over the internet with no fixes known. Ford needs to issue a recall and fix this ASAP before someone gets seriously hurt or is killed from the extreme loss of power the vehicle is suffering from when this happens.

I just had my 07 owed to the dealer for the same issues. We were on I-71 and all of a sudden I couldn't accelerate and my speedometer went to zero. My RPMs were revving up to 3K. We have an 07 and 08 Edge and both have had transmission issues. I'm going to call the service department and ask that they check the TSS and OSS sensors before they look any deeper! Thanks for the advice!

My 2011 edge is showing the wrench on my screen but my suv still runs fine, so what could it be? It doesn’t lose power when the light comes on it just says see manual!! This is scary because this can cause a serious accident!

Answer to my previous post: at the dealership they couldn’t find the problem but I told them to replace the Electronic Throttle Body. Problem fixed. No issues since (9 months now)!

I have fixed three Ford Edges now, two 2007ends and one 2008. All had wrench lights coming and going at 200,000 km plus. Eventually it will wreck your transaxle, if TSS and Oss sensors are not changed more so TSS sensor. I changed both because I had transaxle opened up anyways. This should have been a Ford recall just like the newer ford f150's like 2011, 2012 that are having same problems. TSS sensor gets dirty crud built up from old transmission oil and temperature breakdown. You could get away with just changing the TSS sensor by taking front plate off to unplug it and fish it through small hole.

Don't forget to drain transaxle oil at least 3 times and refill before you change sensors, or you will have same problem again. Spending a couple hundred bucks on oil and a sensor is better than couple thousand or more on a transaxle. That is providing you haven't wreaked it by keep driving it like this for a year.

Every Ford Edge 2007 and up is going to do this I can promise you, before or after 200,000 km. Cheap sensors wearing out in transaxle because ford promised you a maintenance free transaxle up to 250,000km Bull SH%#.

Just started experience the illuminated light issue. No power problems or shut down otherwise. Wondering if it is just a bad sensor. Seems to come and go. Always disappears when the car is restarted. Seems to only come up when the car isn't quite warmed up yet.

I have a 2014 Ford Edge and was driving home on the highway going 70 in the fast lane and this happened to me the other night. I had to drift over and almost got killed. Shut engine off, waited about 20 minutes and started it and it was fine. Brought it to dealership and they couldn't find any problems. I will print out this chain and bring it back to them. Picked up yesterday, was going to the store today and the same thing happened. Thanks all!

i have a similar problem of intermittent wrench sign displaying on the screen and then the vehicle starts limping and then completely haults. when restarted in 3 mins then it worked fine again and this had been going on for sometime. took the car to the mechanic on several occasions but they could not detect the problem as that time the wrench sign did not appear. one fine lucky day i was abt to leave from the workshop and just 2 mins away min car limped with this wrench error and i immediately called the mechanic who installed his programming machine and the problem was finally detected as : THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL STUCK OPEN:

This is not just a Ford Edge problem. I have a 2012 Ford E 250 doing the exact same thing. Replaced the throttle body. No change. Not throwing any codes. When the wrench light comes on, the van goes into limp mode and I pull over. I shut off engine and count to 30. After restart, the wrench light is gone and I can proceed. I also get a random engine light that will come on and goe off after a day but still no codes. Very frustrated.

After replacing my brake booster, my 2013 edge started loosing RPMs after getting on the high way. Would have to press on the gas pedal and let go completely and press again just to keep up my speed. Today, my wrench light came on. Prior to replacing brake booster i didn't have this issue.
