Gear shifter moves but car rolls as its in neutral no matter what

Asked by Tiffany Sep 20, 2012 at 06:22 PM about the 2007 Pontiac G6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When i went to put my car in park it still rolled forward, when I put it in reverse it still rolled foward.  Its as if the gear shifter isn't putting it into the correct gear.  Now I have turned my car off and it won't restart because it doesn't think its in park?  What could this be?

check your shift cable.. is it sliding freely? binding? the cable or linkage could be bad. inspect it. it is located above the transmission on the driver's side of the engine. block the wheels & have someone move the shifter to find it. that is quite a new car to have that kind of problem.. i'm wondering if there is a recall or technical bulletin on it. my 89 riviera went 20 years before it snapped off.
