the battery

What do you mean "ring is around all three wires near the battery"? Do you have 3 wires tied together close to the battery? Do you know if they are + or - leads? Maybe one is an aftermarket radio connection and it is not making contact with the others.

All three wires are neg ( - )... factory stereo... checked for corrosion... none present... only thing left to check is actual alternator output...
I would start at the other end of the electrical circuit. If this was an alternator problem it would surface in a much different way. Find the fuse for the radio circuit and remove the fuse. Then take a volt meter and see if you have power to the source side of the fuse. It should be 12v. If it is, the problem lies between the fuse and the radio. If it isn't then the problem is between it and the battery/alternator side of the circuit. Question - Does the radio have a separate fuse on its rear panel and was this verified as OK when you checked the fuses? Also, is there evidence of corrosion on the fuse and contact in the main fuse block?
