hey guys: im thinking of buying a '79 911 sc targa, less engine/tranny, first time restoration. Thoughts?

I have worked in a machine shop for a few years, and i have an opportunity to pick up a 79 911 sc targa for about $3700. I have never worked on porsches, but have played w vws, subarus, jeeps for a couple of years. Car doesnt have engine or tranny. I am thinking/curious about a more modern engine (= more reliable?) but dont want to overload the older parts w power, etc. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. I know the engine was probably a 3L flat six, 5 speed. Can I go 6 speed now? Same or larger engine? Remanufactured engine, or new engine? Ballpark total costs? (I know that will probably be impossible....) thanks for your time in advance.

Contact LA Porsche breakers and see what they have lying around. They'll also be able to advise you on upgrades for this chassis.

The only easy upgrade would be the Carrera2 3.2 motor. You would want the G50 manual tranny. The standard SC 3.0 motor is considered by many to be the most reliable engine porsche ever produced, so if you get a good deal on a 3.0 with a G50 - you may want to go for it!
