gas gauge messes up

Asked by admgram Mar 08, 2014 at 11:58 AM about the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My gauges are messing up . Sometimes the tach will work right and other times it won't. Now the gas gauge is messing up and going past the full into the temp gauge. When it's shut off sometimes it will go to empty and others to only the 1/8 or 1/4 tank . It's hard to know what gas is in it. What can cause this and how to fix it.

My 04 Cavalier does the SAME thing. The RPM is all the way over so is speedometer and the ONLY way to know how much gas I have is to 'catch it acting up and the try just turning the key. Don't start it just turn the key off and on anf the gauge might work itself down to Empty and once it does start the car and then that's how much gas you have. Keep doing this until you can repai or sale like I am. This was my 2nd GM car and I'm done. Going with a Honda. Sorry U S A. I try to by American made. Got to have a Dependable car. also safe. Hope this helps. Please let me know. would love to hear.

Buy the stuff at auto zone and the gauge brand new or used ones do it your self or a car repair shop
