a defective chain tensioner/ chain...and they know this...think how much it would cost gm to recall this..
What is a DTC code? A defective chain? What do you mean?
When I first turned it over all the lights on the dashboard came on and then when I tried to start it and turn it back on again the check engine light and a couple others were all and I'm not sure exactly.
If your timing chain is slack or off, your on-board diagnostics (OBD) will store a trouble code, or codes (what the others are referring to as Diagnostic Trouble Codes, or DTCs). Your mechanics should have read these as part of their troubleshooting. You can also have these read for free at any auto parts store. Do this and post the codes for us and we may be able to offer suggestions on how to repair or deal with mechanics.
Amy, DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code. The codes will tell you if you have bad modules. Since the timing belt is mechanical the DTC codes may not indicate a belt issue. Go with the mechanic has the best references/reputation.
