cooling fan doesn't run, so engine overheats when during extended idling time..

A good diagnostic Scan tool can switch the fan on and off to check its operation. Usually though, it's the fan motor. Unfortunately, you'll need to purchase the fan, motor, and shroud as an assembly. Very common failure.
