Full of fluid goes in gear shifts hard into gear

Would it be a floor shifter, and is it cold where you are? I had 3° this morning...Is it any better when the car warms up...

Chicago weather. Gear shift is on steering wheel column. Just started happening when I turn steering wheel after having been parked. It appears otherwise fine at other times. 2003 Impala. Thank you for your input and time. Much appreciated.
