I just had new tires put on my daughters 2008 Corolla and had them check the alignment. Was told rear sims needed but Toyota say not needed. Which is it?

I just had new tires put on my daughters 2008 Corolla and had them check the alignment.  Was told front is good but rear is slightly off.  I called Toyota since I have not noticed any unusual wear of the tires and Toyota say you do not do that. They said the the rear toe is self adjusting and that no matter how many times they put it on the machine they will get a different number.  Am i understanding this correctly for can you explain?

I am sorry. I was told rear SHIMS were needed by the company i bought the tires from. Toyota said not necessary for this car.

A lot of people including Toyota is not for shims cause of the work that it requires, now if you want your car to be aligned properly and the rear camber/toe is out, then you have two choices 1. Replace the rear axle (or) 2. Have a shim installed so your alignment can be true. If you still don't believe in installing the shim to get correct spec, (these specs are from Toyota, not the guy or shop performing the alignment.) then why have your car aligned at all? With out settings rear alignment the front is never true. You have to adjust rear before front can be set.. signed advanced alignment text.
