Its tough to say. This model could have had very rare option, depending on condition could be worth much more than a run of the mill GTO. I would look around for someone that knows these car that can tell you what it is exactly. If any rare options or not. Some get very lucky and find a build sheet under the rear seat or even the front seats stuck to underside of the seat or even behind the dash.

Rust may not be a issue, anyone restoring a old car can tolerate some rust repair. You may be seeing alot of surface rust verses rust threw every. Find the VIN number, it can be decoded, which will give you a good starting point. Then you can look for your part numbers on engine ect. to see if its matching up or not to what VIN says you have. Like said above you need a collector/vintage car person to decipher it for you and possible also give quote but also let you know what is good or bad, get all the information and second opinions buy professional as you can. You even may be better off calling a car restorer (professional) that restores back to original if its a rare car and matching numbers or a custom shop if its not matching numbers and have it put back on the road as your husband wanted and keep or sell it.
Boxes of parts scare off most buyers as they have no idea what they are buying or that the parts are complete. Without photos and the VIN I would say maybe ten grand on a good day. Surface rust is no big deal. Cancer is.
If so I can be reached at 214-442-3143. I'm a serious collector with a huge climate controlled shop in north Dallas,TX.
