how can I trace the history of a 1969 buick custom special

Asked by colesy55 Nov 28, 2015 at 05:01 PM about the 1969 Buick Skylark

Question type: General

I just purchased a 1 owner 1969 Black on Black Buick Custom Speacial. 350
v8 3 Spd on the column. But vin Number is 4332791118257 and does not
show up as being a valid vin number. Where do I go from here?

The early 17-digit VIN numbers with good information on it was 1980 or 1981, I forget for sure but somewhere around there. Before that all manufacturers used their own system for 'serial numbers'

Most of the online VIN decoders can't work with older VINs. Try looking up Buick forums dedicated for that model or age range, members on those sites will often have the VINs broken down. If your purchase is reasonably original, try looking under the carpet, under the rear seat, or on top of the gas tank for a build sheet - you might get lucky. Otherwise you'll have to consult a knowledgebase (forum, or source book) to review all your VINs, casting, date or other stamped numbers on your car to break down what you have. Here might be a few starting points: http://www.buicks.net/years/69.shtml (has some - http://forums.aaca.org/forum/2-buick-clubs/ - http://www.v8buick.com/ - There are plenty more Buick clubs out there but these will get you started. Good luck.

Did you get any original paper work from the guy that you bought the car from? Like the original dealership papers or window sticker? Was the car ever registered? There should be a record of that number with the state. I would have the cops run it and see what pops up.
