1986 Mercury cougar, just did a full tune up. Now I am getting like a little backfire and occasionally acts like its not catching gears when I try to accelerate. Is this the tranny?

The tranny won't make your engine backfire. Occasionally plug wires can get misplaced on a tuneup. This will cause backfire. Not sure what was all involved in your tuneup, but I would retrace those steps and look for an issue with the tuneup. I say all this assuming that the car was fine before the work????

There is 2 possibilities...A plug wire in the wrong area or you also might need to adjust your carb. You might have it adjusted to get to much fuel.

Could be wrong plugs or gap , firing order wrong by placing wrong wire on plug or timing could be off.
