I am thinking about wanting to put a bigger
performance engine in my cougar. How should I
go about looking for one?

Your Cougar came with one of three engines. The 2.3 Liter four cylinder,3.8 liter V6, and the 5.0 liter V8. It would be a helpful starting point to know which you have.
