Engine replacement

The Bullitt cars had a 390. Never heard of a Chevy engine in them. Where did you pick that up? The Dodge was way faster than the Stang so they had to tell the driver to back off a bit.
Two of the three? two? cars have been found and they had 390's in them. I am fairly well up on Bullitt trivia but I have never known someone who actually worked on the set. It would be interesting to track that story down. Perhaps he wanted this but did not get it?
If Ford was a sponsor of the movie they would not want it to be known it was a Chevy engine in that car. I do know that McQueen was pretty desperate to buy that car regardless of what engine was in it.
