Is my 1936 Buick Roadmaster a positive or negative
ground system? It's 6volt straight 8. How can I tell

The 36 was a 6 volt positive system, look at the battery it the negative was grounded to the body and and the positive gooding the to the starter then it a positive system...don't change the system unless you know what you are doing, the entire car will need to upgraded to 12 volts such as blubs and such...the car will run fine on 6 volts
Cometguy61 is correct....unless someone has made some changes before you purchased the vehicle. I changed my old buick to a gel-cell battery like Optima for a couple of reasons. (1) the big old 6v batteries are all old technology and depending on how much you drive the car, the batteries seldom last more than a year. (2)the old batteries weigh a ton and it almost takes two people to lift them into the engine compartment. So for a few $$ more you can get a lighter, longer lasting battery with lots more cranking amps.
