72 convertible; Help for a newbie...please

Asked by rookie2 Jul 09, 2011 at 03:33 PM about the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Question type: General

Hi, I'm the proud new owner of a 72 cutlass supreme convertible. It belonged to my step-dad and I'm interested in restoring it. I was hoping someone could help me interpret this information that I got from the plate under the hood.

ST72    34267LAN322615 BDY
TR 979  57 T PNT
12C (or maybe 2C)      A65

I know the original paint and trim colors are in there....would love to know what they are. What do the other codes mean? Also any recommendations on any books about this car and restoring would be greatly appreciated.....TIA

TIA: ST72 means that it's a '72 model 3=olds, 42=cutlass, 67=converible LAN=Lansing MI where it was assembled TR 979 is the interior trim pkg, I think your is a bench seat 57 T PNT is the paint code; 57=Baroque Gold (body color) T=Beige top

For help with this and other questions you may want to join the Oldsmobile Club of America. The membership is around $30 a year and they have contacts for each year of Oldsmobile Cars. I've been a member since I've owned my '72 Cutlass Convertible (11 years) and I find it to be helpful. They send a monthly magazine with contact data, literature manuals and guides, car parts and cars for sale, vendors/suppliers, car events, etc., all related to Oldsmobile. Another vendor to look at for parts and literature is OPG (Original Parts Group). Good luck with your Cutlass, and I hope you get to enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.
