i have an 87 cutlass an it has a 307 would you recommend putting a cam or going with a bigger tranny?

Your tranny can easily handle a little more power from the engine. A bit of a cam and some headers and a good tuneup if it needs it will make it quite a bit peppier and more fun to drive. Service the transmission at the same time and add a mild shift kit if one is available and you should be good. As long as you don't abuse it the transmission should be fine as long as its not already worn out.
