NOVICE VAN OWNER: Im planning on purchasing a 2000/2002 astro van for a cross country journey next year. Any opinion on the use of snow tires and 2 wheel drive to improve traction but not affect gas milage? :)

Question type: Car Customization

Hello! Im planning on converted an astro van, to live in and travel around the
US starting in august 2016. Someone gave me the advice to look at 2WD with
snow tires instead of 4WD with out snow tires, to get the same traction but
better gas milage. Thoughts?

Im also fairly sure that I will be purchasing an astro van and have read reviews
that say the 1996-99 vans have a lot more problems than 92-96 astros and
2000-2002, has anyone found this to be true of the 96-99's? because they are
significantly less expensive than other models.

Thank you!!!

Mariah :)

You will get much better traction with four wheel drive whether or not you have snow tires. I would suggest getting something else as I have heard nothing but bad regarding Astro vans.

Thanks for your response, Do you have any recommendations for vans? my price range is 3000-4000 and I was hoping for something under 100,000 miles. The astro van seems to be the only thing on the market fitting those 2 things. Thank you!!

Four wheel drive vans are very rare and most are aftermarket conversions. Toyota did sell a 4 wheel drive van a long time ago. I can't say how good they were but they were Toyota's. I think there is a reason why Astro Vans are cheap!
