With either the 2.4/Getrag or 2.2/Isuzu there should be a dipstick on the top of the tranny at the back. Under the brake master cylinder. But if your tranny is already grinding then there is damage. Check the level or drain and fill with fresh oil, it may help with the issues.

The damage will be to the sleeve/synco. They must slide freely. If the synco starts failing the tranny will "grind" whn switching in and out of the problem gear. Eventually the grinding causes enough damage where the sleeve cannot slide freely and you get stuck in gear. Low fluid, contaminated fluid or faulty parts are the common causes.
