I solved this problem by buying an aftermarket aerial and cable and putting the aerial on the bonnet bypassing the focus cable and aerial. I could not get AM radio and now I get it on 5 stations. The problem is caused by a weak poorly shielded cable on the Focus. The cable picks up engine noise when away from the capital city reception. The company says they will look at the problem. It cost me $200.

I got no help or sympathy from Ford but after 5 years and 6 months have fixed it. They gave me a new radio but the problem was not the radio it is the cable from the radio to the aerial. it is not an efficient cable. almost all car brands I know work in my region except my ford.
