2008 MKX Vista Roof will open but not close

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Pressing the open button will open the Vista Roof panoramic sunroof to all
preset positions, but it will not close.  You can see the guides on each side
push the roof back but then they don't pull the roof back with them to close
it.  Took it to dealer and they wanted $2000 to repair.  This is a simple
aluminum track and 12 volt electric motor. Should not cost that much.
Service rep was able to push it mostly closed while my wife pressed the
close button.  Any tips on how to fix this or at the very least just get it to
close completely?

Okay so with my wife pushing the close button and and a buddy and myself pushing it closed we got it completely closed! Now to see if we can take out the fuse so it doesn't open again.

I went nutts trying to find a diy solution for this problem for my 2010 Lincoln MKX. This is the second time it happened to me - that the VistaRoof gets stuck in the open position, but the shade will open and close. The first time it happened to me (@ 1 year ago), I took it to the dealership, and luckily, was only charged $75. The tech explained it had to be re-programmed. Seemed to work just fine since with the occasional sticking/struggling to close about midway. But when your Lincoln MKX VistaRoof gets stuck in the open position and the window nudges a bit, and your shade still opens and closes, here's a possible solution. I found this looking at the same problem for the FORD EDGE owner's since they use the same roof: Start the engine. If sunroof open, then press and hold the glass close switch until the glass is in CLOSED position. Release, repress and hold the glass close switch (for at least 10 seconds). - The glass panel will move toward the front hard-stop and stall. - The shade panels will move toward their front hard-stops, stall, move back a few millimeters, then forward. - After the shade panels have finished moving backward and forward, release the glass close switch. Press and hold the glass close switch. -The glass and shades will fully open together. Then, the glass will close first and then the shades will return to the fully CLOSED position. When the shades have stopped moving, release the glass close switch. Initialization is now complete. Verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open, one-touch close, one-touch vent (glass) and one-touch open for the shades. - If roof opening panel does not operate correctly, repeat Steps 2 through 5. NOTE: The glass close switch must be held during the entire initialization process or the sequence will be aborted and the roof will remain in a de-initialized state. Keep objects and body parts clear of the glass panel when carrying out the initialization procedure. During the initialization procedure, the glass panel closes with high force and cannot detect objects in its path
