"Cuda" is the cutesy name that Chrysler gave the Barracuda HiPo- 1970? sounds about right- the '70s was the beginning of the decay of American Culture- and how everything had to get too damn clever- and cute

VIN numbers are different. 2nd character in the VIN is an H for Cuda. Cuda was high performance only until 74...you could get a 318 Cuda in 74. They had to have a name change for the high performance group. Road Runner had more punch than Belvedere for one example, Camaro and Z28 is another, Mustang and Boss is another. Was the decline of the muscle car era and...... the American culture as well.....thanks to government intervention and manipulation in both segments.
THEY ARE THE SAME CARS NICKNAME DURING DECLINE ERA #CARFACTS#USHOULDLOOKITUP#DUH
I have a 1972 cuda with the H in the vin # but yet The title shows and lists the car as a barracuda / Cuda !!! This car also came with factory A/C... What do I have ?
The Cuda and the barracuda are NOT the same car!! The Cuda is a limited edition smaller muscle car that was only in production for a few years. They only produced about 300 Cuda total.
The 'cudas differed from the barracudas. Cudas had performance options as standard, and are highly desirable today. The engine options for 70-71 were the 440, 440 6 bbl, or hemi. These were the race on Sunday and sell on Monday cars.
They ARE NOT the same car, nor is the Cuda' a smaller car as one of you BONEHEADS talking out of your butt stated! They are the same size. The Cuda' is to the Barracuda as the GTO is to the Lemans! Understand dummies?
Sungar and GuruVTM3M is right. I used to have a 71 Cuda. They also came with a 383 Magnum engine which mine had and I believe also available with the 440 Magnum. I was lucky in I got mine from a guy that worked in the factory and ordered it with all the options. It had steel louvers over the rear window, a rear wing, 6 pack hood with hood pins and ground effects all around. Unfortunately I haven't seen one like it since I sold it while in college.
Why would you sell it. I made the same mistake in the early 80s I bought mine for 250.00 and a basket case. After 6 months almost good as new. Then I sold it. It had a 340 6 pack. And ya there more than 300 cudas. Where is this guy getting his info.

All Cuda's can be identified by the letter "S" in the vin as the Second Letter (BS) and were the High Performance version of the Barracuda. They only came with the 340, 383, 440 and 426 Engine Package. They all came with Heavy Duty Suspensions, Sway Bars, Road Lights (Fog Lights) and Hood Pins. The Cuda is more desirable and more collectable than the Barracuda because they were SPECIAL (S) then and they are "Special" Now.
No they are not the same. The cuda is just a little biger with a 4 speed and a butt load more horse power.
70 through 74 are the same size they are all barracuda the cuda is high performance
WRONG! Ask Galien Govier who is a mopar master! There is a Cuda' performance model, and a BARRACUDA, non performance model. Also, anyone STUPID enough to SIT THEIR FAT ASS on their car hood is an idiot!
I have a cuda in restoration. It has round tail lights and I have never seen this on a cuda or a barracuda. My girlfriend calls it "the Ferrari of musle cars". This cuda needs everything rebuilt and the plates are too worn for matching numbers. The good thing is it's a 340 6 pack however the outside of the car was pretty plain. Thats all there is to really say. My question is when did Mopar put out a hard top cuda with round tail lights and a 340 6 pack?????
All I know is I agree with the guy that said he has a 1972 CUDA that has a title that shows it to be a barracuda / Cuda it came with a 340 6 pack ... rally package which came with a rally hood , steering wheel and rally dash gauges ! It also came with factory A/C and it had come with vinyl on the top but over time someone took it off and made it look like a hard top . Also my vin # starts with BS which stands for Barracuda Special !!! But yet it has Cuda badging on the rear and barracuda on the dash , passenger side above glove box !!! You can take this information to the BANK !!!
72 is the first year for the round taillights! Also, there is NO WAY your 72 came with a 340 6 pack from the factory!! Absolutely NO WAY!! Someone put that motor/carb setup in your 72. The 73 and last year 74 also had the round taillights. As far as "taking this info to the bank" crap. Yeah, take it to the bank and they will laugh their ass off at you for not educating yourself about your car!!! All the 70-74 Barracudas/Cuda's had "barracuda" on the DASH! Grow up and educate yourself. Ever hear if GOOGLE?? Most of us guys received our CAR EDUCATION from working at garages or going to car shows or BUYING BOOKS for suit sake.
The absolute authority on barracuda. And cudas is Mark Worman on graveyard cars on the motortrend channel
"mark workman" IS NOT THE AUTHORITY ON CUDAS! The REAL AUTHORITY on molars PERIOD (to those REAL CAR GUYS) IS GALEN GOVIER! Period!!
GURU18QTM, You're a moron if you think one car is BIGGER OR SMALLER THAN THE OTHER! So many uneducated people talking out of their asses on these great cars!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tSEe84vUrw The ouside badge says CUDA and on the dash its says Barraucuda !!! what is it ??
I am onto my 4 th cuda or ebody All barracuda / cudas came with barracuda on the dash full stop BH 23 barracuda BP 23 grand coupe the luxury model and BS 23 the cuda prefomance model standard cuda 383 engine every thing optional the cuda has a 108 inch week base the 70 to 74 are the same even between the 70 and 71 there so many little different things The 340 six pac was one year only the am 8 track radio was one year only 1970 and so and so
So I have had my 69 Barracuda formula S 4 speed now for 41 years. I love it, last year of the "A" body Barracuda. The E body has way more available aftermarket parts than the A body clearly showing the E body style following is stronger. To my understanding all E bodies are the same dimensions and car size. What I have heard is the Hemi versions actually where made with a factory modified "B" body subframe to handle the weight and power. The Big block and Hemi E bodies are also known for being nose heavy. In 1974, guy I worked with bought an 1970 AAR 4 speed six pack car that popped wheelies with ease on our lunch and Friday paycheck to bank runs. It is said that the small block version E bodies where a better footprint weight balance than the big block E bodies. Sadly EPA requirements, USDOT requirements, and insurance companies pretty much reduced these to a mousey 318 by the time 1974 rolled around. I drool every time I get to see an AAR Cuda, there is one around here in Seattle area still.
Barracuda and 'Cuda were the basic same car. It was a matter of options that made a car a Cuda rather than a Barracuda. There was even a Cuda model in 1969 (contrary to popular belief) 1971 was the last year for the big blocks. There were no Hemis or 440's or even 383's after 1971. You can see a BIG difference in the 70 and 71. The 71 is the only year it had 4 headlights and the only year with the fender vents, which make it obvious as to the year. My brother and I both had 70 Cuda's brand new, except mine was a Barracuda, I couldn't afford the the Cuda model, but they were the same damn car except a little different hood. If you had a 6 cylinder you had a Barracuda or Barracuda Gran Coupe. The high-performance models were marketed as 'Cuda deriving from the 1969 option. The E-body's engine bay was larger than that of the previous A-body, facilitating the release of Chrysler's 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi for the regular retail market. IN the industry what made a car a Cuda was called a TRIM PACKAGE and that's it.
If you were fishing you would notice that the cuda has larger and sharper teeth then the Barracuda. The same goes for the Plymouth muscle cars.
'Cuda was simply the designation for the high performance cars as opposed to the base models with a 6. There were a few appearance options such as the elastomeric front bumper and the grills changed each year from 70, 71 and 71. No mystery people..
All barracuda's and cuda's were hardtops . If a car has a vinyl roof it just means it has a vinyl roof be it a sedan or hardtop. Look up the difference between a hardtop and sedan. Sedan has window frames on the doors and a hardtop doesn't.
To guru6bh62, ever hear of a CONVERTIBLE? DUH!
There were Barracuda convertibles.
I assumed people on e Car Gurus site knew a Rag wasn't a hardtop DUH! Do I have to explain everything? What a bunch of lunkheads I stumbled on here!
To guru6bh62, yeah, and YOURE THE BIGGEST ONE YA KNOB.
Your statement was "All barracuda's and cuda's were hardtops". Go back and read your own words.
some guy on facebook marketplace says he has a real,,,cuda,..with a 318 it came with, theres no rectangular places in back for real,,,cuda,, exhaust though,an a real,,,cuda,,,never came with a 318, yes a regular barracuda did, he says his vin starts with bh, or bs...............
GuruF7NYZ, are YOU REALLY THIS FING STUPID? THE 70 THRU 74 WERE EXACTLY THE SAME BODYS AS FAR AS DIMENSIONS YOU KNOB.
I have a 73 Cuda. It is a real Cuda. It has the Cuda markings on the outside and the interior does say Barracuda. They just used the same dash. The most highly desired Barracudas' were the Hemi 70 and 71 convertibles. only a few made in the teens going for a couple million. Mine was modified when I bought it. 340 six-pack. Challenger was called the scat pack. 340 Cuda was made for competition rally racing against Ford and Chevy with their 350 and 360 size engine. Cuda designates a high performance car. 340, 440, Hemi.
Guru6CSN6. I have had many Barracuda's and Cuda's. My first was purchased at 15 years old from the original owner with 73k in 1984. Was a 1973 Cuda, 318, 2 barrel, 3spd bucket seat car ordered from a local dealer. This was the base Cuda. He drag raced a 1970 car and liked it so much ordered a daily driver. When the car arrived at the dealership he gad them install a pistol grip 4spd. 4spd was not an option with a 318. The reason for all this was apparent when you drove the car. 1st to 2nd the car ran hard but in 3rd and 4th gearing was tall. So stoplight to stoplight was pretty quick and still did 18 to 20mpg on the highway. Only other changes made were headers, cragers with meats and air shocks. Oh red crushed velvet seat inserts and Playboy air freshener. Gotta love the 70's...
MANUEL, YOU CANT GET A "Cuda' " with a 318! What YOU had was the BARRACUDA! GET IT RIGHT!
Some good Info&some bad
440 SOUNDS BIG but the 426 Hemi had more grunt. That is the difference between a Barracuda & a Cuda. The 426 Hemi Cuda is #1.

I had a 70 340 cuda, with a slapstick automatic, and a 73 cuda with a 4 speed. most guys they're are right when they said you can't get a cuda with a 318, that would be a barracuda. The cudas came with a 340, 383, 426, and 440. the body styles were basically the same with changes to the front grille, and the taillight sections, according to the year, round taillights came out in 72. in 74 they added a 360 motor. and yes, the difference between the cuda, and the barracuda, was the cuda was the hi performance version.
