Check where the dipstick level says the level is at and depending on where the mark is add 1 quart at a time then wait ten minutes before rechecking so the new liquid can settle into the pan. If you run out and the level isn't readable on the stick add 3 to start then wait. Also remember the engine must be running to check transmission fluid or you'll get a false reading and the trani should be warm otherwise you'll get a false reading too as well as the temp of the trani fluid. If the fluid is cold and not warmed up by the engine it can false read too.
