I drive a 1998 Chevy Tahoe 4x4. Recently, I was driving down the highway and my spedometer began to fluctuate greatly, then the vehicle started surging and lagging when I tried to get up to speed. Then my anti-lock brakes light came on and now my brakes are grinding. What do you figure the problem is?

some 4x4 come with traction control that lightly applies on breaks on slipping wheel to put power to opp side. The only thing i can think of would be a malf in this system. If a malf happened and the ECM might have picked it up it would turn off TC/ABS module. Which would turn on ABS light. Hope it help keep us informed i'd like to know what happened myself
I'm thinking that, coincidently, you have two different unrelated problems. 1) You need a brake job, 2) your speed sensor in your tranny is going bad. When the ECM can't detect or read the speed of the tranny, it will throw it into "limp" mode not allowing it to shift out of 1st or 2nd gear(not sure exactly which gear on those), anyway, it will strange when that happens. It still should run smooth & fine while idleing.
my 97 tahoe is doing almost the same thing speed / rpm and gear slect not lighting up and not downshifting or shifting up through 1st and 2nd gear takes off in 3rd or od skipps a little at high speed otherwise runs fine at top speed no passing gear . i'm inclined to believe it's a sensor or elec problem
2002 Tahoe wont go in reverse but idles fine and you have to baby it into 1st gear then it basically skips to 3rd i guess but it doesnt change out of 3rd I was told it was the pump but somebody else said just to replace the while thing cause the trans are crap in them
