This site will walk you through it. The post is for a 2002, but the 1997 is configured very similarly http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/How_do_you_replace_spark_plugs_in_a_2002_Monte_Carlo_SS

Put a jack under the oil pan, but sandwich a piece of btween the jack and the oil pan so you dont damage the pan. Just pump the jack up till it is touching the pan. Remove the front motor mounts. Jack the engine up so it will tilt forward slightly. You should be able to reach behind the engine now and remove the wires and plugs.

The Most common way to get the rear 3 plugs is to release the (dog bone)front motor mounts and just roll the car foward and the engine will tilt foward about 6 inches and makes it a lil easier to get the plugs.

what ever way you do this DO NOT JACK THE CAR BY THE OIL PAN!!!! the oil pan is only a stamp formed pice of sheet metel or cast alum. both damage easy!!!! and can be costly. use jacking points on car located under rocker pannel towords front of car door

Follow kjwatson's advice. You'll need a special spark plug socket if you don't already have one. Be very careful when you thread them back in. DO NOT PUT A JACK UNDER THE OIL PAN.
