A while ago my missus had a new starter put into her HJ panelvan by the NRMA and it had a real strange noise. A real high pitched whirring noise. It doesn't get driven much so it hasn't had many miles put on it yet, but it's never caused any problems so far. It might have started the car maybe 50 times since.

A new starter motor should sound normal. any kind of abnormal noise means another problem, i.e. ring gear or bad fittment.
