1st step ensure sufficient coolant is in the reservoir, next step, check the electric fan is kicking in when the temperature gets high this lets you know if the thermostat is opening and closing properly allowing the hot water to be cooled down, a thermostat is not expensive and easily changed. If the thermostat has been renewed and the problem re-occurs your next road of investigation is the head gasket or water pump

check coolant after every drive, if down you may have a leaky water pump which doesnt leave a puddle, or a head gasket issue, the cheap out for the head in a product called chemiweld (or known as car yards best friend), follow the instructions (drain coolant, fill with water and chemw drain again, add coolant). Then again if you dont drive far jusu buy ag new radiator cap if it has one and keep filling it up.
